The way to contact mental health crisis services in the North East and North Cumbria is changing

The way to contact mental health crisis services in Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, Tyneside, Sunderland and North Cumbria is changing

Last year, the NHS 111 ‘mental health’ option was launched across the country. This means wherever you are, you can get help in a mental health crisis by calling NHS 111.

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW) provides the mental health crisis services and NHS 111 ‘mental health’ option call handling team in our area.

They have announced that from 1 October 2025, their local 0800 crisis numbers which you may be familiar with will be closed.

Instead, if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call NHS 111 and select the ‘mental health’ option. NHS 111 is free and available 24/7.

Local text numbers for Deaf people who use British Sign Language (BSL) are also being replaced by one single text number covering these areas. The new text number will be 07860 064 775.
